Be Genki’s products are all about healing your body, mind and spirit. Rescu. asks Be Genki’s Founder, Sam Sample, how her range of skincare and herbal products can chase away your Winter blues and give your skin an all-over glow.
1. What inspired you to create your brand and what are your top three products?
A few years ago, I helped a friend gain the confidence to take control of her life by creating an essential oil blend for her (Be Genki Serenity) and implementing positive rituals to her lifestyle, which enabled her to improve her state of mind and get off Prozac. This inspired me to develop three more essential oil blends and accompanying lifestyle rituals to help bring about holistic happiness in peoples’ lives. Too often, I hear stories about people who run to the chemist to pop a pill for a symptom that they’re suffering from, when they could be utilising alternative medicine and/or making lifestyle changes to target the cause. Top three products: Be Genki Serenity Face Mist Be Genki Tranquility Bath And Shower Oil Be Genki Sensuality Body Oil
2. Which celebrities do you think embody the Be Genki philosophy most and why?
Sarah Murdoch, Megan Gale, Erika Heynatz and Miranda Kerr – they all epitomise Australian beauty, and appear to be happy and healthy on a physical, emotional and spiritual level.
3. The transition from Winter to Spring confuses my skin. What are the best steps you can take to season proof your skin?
Most of us think about skincare for the face and forget about the rest of the body, especially neglecting our skin during the colder months. Easy to do when it’s kept hidden under jeans, stockings and jumpers. The ritual that I ALWAYS try to maintain year-round is dry skin brushing followed by full body moisturising, which really does season proof my skin so that I maintain my healthy glow. Dry skin brushing is a wonderful body treatment for exfoliating and promoting beautiful soft skin and is really worth the extra few minutes it takes in the morning. Applying a nourishing body oil or cream to your body is another MUST, as it certainly helps to keep my skin silky smooth and glowing. In summer, I tend to use a lighter body cream and in winter, a rich body oil.
4. Is it true that Winter can offset moodiness and feelings of being sad? What are some activities you can do to ‘be Genki’ in Winter months?
Yes, certainly. It is proven that a lack of sunshine (and therefore Vitamin D) can lead to depression. To be ‘genki’ during the winter months, ensure that you spend an adequate amount of time outside in the sunshine and fresh air. Exercise is another essential thing to maintain as it is proven to help offset moodiness and feelings of sadness. Or you can always revert to one of my other personal favourites for helping to uplift your mood – aromatherapy.
Essential oils stimulate receptors in the nose, which relay messages to the limbic system, the part of the brain which regulates emotions, to help bring about the positive change that you’re seeking. Neroli oil is regarded as one of the most effective sedative and antidepressant remedies and is reputed to be wonderful in helping with states of anxiety and depression, and is included in all Be Genki Serenity products.
5. Everyone has been so sick this winter, but as the Codral ad says, you have to ‘Soldier On’.Can you suggest any instant beauty boosts to fake feeling fabulous when you are actually not feeling or looking the best?
FACE MISTS!!! I keep a couple by my desk, one by my bed, one in the fridge, and one in my handbag. They really are a life saver and a fabulous “pick me up”. The sensation of having a fine mist of scented water to lightly freshen your face is instantly reviving, especially when the face mist is scented with pure essential oils that target a specific feeling that you’d like to bring about: calming (Be Genki Serenity) or invigorating (Be Genki Vitality).
6. If my budget and time is restricted, but I’d like to create a little spa-at-home ritual for my body, can you point me in the right direction?
It’s easy to create a spa experience in the comfort of your own home by setting aside half-an-hour just for you. Turn your mobile phone to silent mode, dim the lights of the bathroom, and shut the door behind you to avoid any interruptions. After watching the bath slowly fill up with water, add a splash of Be Genki Bath And Shower Oil and then slip in. For the next 15 minutes, focus on your breathing and let yourself go. With every breath you take, breathe in relaxation, and breathe out your worries. Pat yourself dry and apply a generous slather of Be Genki Body Cream to rehydrate and soften the skin. Finish with a spritz of Be Genki Face Mist and curl up on the couch with a cup of Be Genki Herbal Tea. We have four ritual boxes – Vitality, Tranquility, Serenity and Sensuality – that include the four products mentioned, packaged in a beautiful gift box, ranging from $114 – $126.
