I have a lot of pigmentation and have been told I have to match my foundation to the colour of my pigment, but this seems to make my skin look too dark. What is the best way to use foundation to cover pigment?

One way to reduce the hyper-pigmentation is with brightening skincare, which is designed to cover dark spots, while simultaneously helping to eliminate them over time. But keep in mind that brightening products, including ours, are not meant to change the color of your skin – rather they are designed to reveal a brighter, more refreshed complexion by visibly reducing discoloration.  You can incorporate an entire brightening range or start with one product such as Extra Bright Advanced Serum to give lackluster skin a concentrated boost of radiance by targeting dark spots and softening fine, dry lines.

When it comes to makeup, the best way to even out skin tone is with foundation. For the most natural look, make sure the product is skin-tone correct and matches your natural skin exactly. Avoid foundations that have a pink or white base because they can make skin look chalky and washed out. To find your perfect shade of foundation, follow these steps: in natural light, swatch the foundation from your cheek to your jaw line, and gently blend it into your skin. The shade that’s imperceptible should be your pick, but double-check it against your forehead, since some women tend to be darker there. Once you’ve found the right shade, apply the foundation all over the face, and then use a foundation stick to touch up discolouration and any redness around the nose, mouth and side of the face. You can also use bronzer to help even out the complexion. Apply the bronzer on the parts of your face where the sun would naturally hit – cheeks nose and chin. Finish with a dusting of bronzer on the neck and chest for a seamless and natural look.

For help choosing the best foundation for your skin tone and type, I recommend visiting a Bobbi Brown counter for a Makeup Lesson. One our specially trained artists will show you how to achieve flawless, natural looking skin.
