Beyoncé needs no surname, which is ironic as lately, it’s her role as Mrs Carter that is taking her to an even higher level of global entertainment domination. Wife, mother, singer, actress, philanthropist, fashion and fragrance designer – there seems no end to Beyoncé’s talents. But with a wellness, beauty and style ethos like hers, the sky is not even the limit.
WELLBEING
To gear up in time to get down on their enormous tour, Jay-Z and Beyoncé – aka Mr and Mrs Carter – embarked on a 22-day vegan diet based on plentiful plant dishes. Even though this was a short-term health kick, Beyoncé’s trainer and nutritionist, Marco Borges, has said that entertainer has a very healthy approach to eating well, and keeping active. “Most people have that imbalance,” he says of the difficulty burning off the calories consumed. “And it’s when they take control of their diet is when they truly take control of their health.”
Marco trains Beyoncé through his signature Power Moves Training Philosophy that works many of her muscle groups simultaneously, allowing her to burn more calories in less time. Exercises include lunges, planks, squats which she does to music to really move her.
Other healthy habits she has continued since her stint as a strict herbivore include regular snacks of cucumbers sprinkled with vinegars, green apple, edamame, lemon and cayenne pepper. “There are times when Beyoncé needs to shed her weight in a short time,” Marco has said. “During these times she skips her full meal lunch and opts for protein shakes.”
Having done the Master cleanse for her role in Dream Girls, she now wouldn’t recommend fast-tracking fat loss. “I did it to lose weight really fast, but it wasn’t fun. There are healthier ways to lose weight.”
BEAUTY
Beyoncé’s skin always zings, which her makeup artist, Sir John, attributes to monthly enzyme peels. “I suggest doing a natural fruit enzyme peel every month to increase cell turnover,” he has said. That way, makeup can be kept as sheer as possible, just as Bey likes it. “She’s a girly girl but she does not like a lot of foundation,” Sir John has shared in an interview. “I try to make sure the skin underneath is perfect and everything else is the icing on the cake.”
On the lip, Beyoncé prefers a matte for a sophisticated edge, so she often cranks up the gloss on the lids with Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream or a bit of lip-gloss. “You’re not trying to coat it like you would your lips,” Sir John has shared, “you just want to give luster to the eye so it reflects light.”
The L’Oreal Spokes Model also loves a little gold eyeshade in the corner of her eyes to really make them pop, having explained that “it’s more subtle than white, but it still really makes you look more awake.”
And her tip for those golden limbs is simple too. “I layer on bronzers for public appearances,” she has said, noting L’Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze One Day Gel as her favored choice.
STYLE
The style icon starts well beneath the designer duds when it comes to creating a sexy aura. Her dressing begins with her scent. “You feel more confident when you’re wearing a fragrance you love,” she has said, no doubt pointing to her plethora of personal fragrances. When it comes to clothes, “I’m adamant about fit,” she has said. “I’ve worn dresses from all different price ranges, and the thing that couture dresses have in common is that the fit is amazing.”
As muse to her mothers House of Dereon fashion line, off duty the eldest of two sisters rocks anything from a loose boho vibe in cut off shorts through to a more chiseled asymmetric silhouette. “I try to work with things that are good for my body,” she has said, noting that there are things she would love to wear, that look better on her sister Solange. “There are things I love that my sister can wear, but she’s thinner and has a different build. I [may] think it’s so sexy, but I know that I’m not going to look the same in it,” she told one interviewer. This is one woman who knows what she likes, and how to learn to love it. “It’s okay to experiment a little bit, but [don’t] get too far from what looks good on you,” she continues. “With accessories, shoes, and bags, you can be as trendy as you like. But certain cuts for your body and colors that look great on you” Those things are forever.”
