Everyone loves a good nude lip, but it is important to know what base of nude is right for you and yes, not every nude is the same.
There are brands with entire nude lipstick collections, which in some way can be quite confusing for consumers, giving them too much choice, but, with the right knowledge of your skin tone, all is easy when choosing your next nude lip!
There has been a big boost of bold lip lovers in recent years and why not, it can really lift your look and be that one focus ‘wow’ product – great for the time poor!
But, their will always be the ever-famous nude lip, the Kardashians trade mark and for women that especially love playing up there eyes, it’s the perfect balance.
How nude is too nude?
MB PRO TIP; The more you dress up yours eyes, the more nude you can go, that way the eyes are THE focus… If you are wearing a more natural eye makeup, always have a nude that is still deeper, or more uplifting in colour than your skin tone, to avoid looking flat – no one wants to purposely make there face look dull because of your own lipstick choice.
When I look at a clients face I am about to apply makeup too, I first of all look at what the clean-faced skin is telling me… Is it showing colour, pink or red tones, which I would then need to disguise and even out, or is it lacking in colour and needing a lift to combat a dull appearance…
A nude lipstick in a beige or tan base can be a great way to eliminate pink tone present on the face… It still surprises me that women with redness concern, wear pink blush and pink base lipsticks that will only make your concern worse!
It is a good idea to balance and reduce redness by using neutral colours, caramel, tan, beige, taupe and sometimes a light peach shade is still better than a pink.
On the other end of the scale, a flat skin needs a little lift, so a peach, beige and pink base nude is perfect to brighten the lip compared to usually the more yellow to olive base skin – using a taupe or tan could flatten your look even more!
TOO NUDE – The lower part of the face is very flat:
Summer or winter:
MB PRO TIP; An easy way to see what base a lipstick is, is to apply a couple of shades that you really like onto your hand and see what vibe you get from the colour… Are you feeling summer, or winter when looking at them?
It is the simple way to see whether it is a cool or warm base and often comparing them with one another will give you a better idea of the undertone to each shade you choose to test. Generally speaking the more fair/pink base your skin is, a warmer, summer tone lip works best as this will balance out the pink in your skin, not bringing more redness out.
That then means that a yellow to olive base skin would look best in more winter, cooler tones as this gives more contrast. Contrast is great if what you are seeing on your skin is a concern, it is the way you can adjust and balance out what you do not want to see.
It does not mean you cannot wear the other option, it just means your skin will look it’s best working in opposites, just like it does with eye colours.
Working in an opposite shade to your eye colour can really bring that eye colour out to be more of a focus – opposites do attract!
MB PRO TIP; Just to re-cap; Blue eyes look best with golden, earth tones, chocolates. Green eyes look best with rich plums, purples, and coppers. Brown eyes can wear all shades, but a flat brown on a brown eye – nothing… dead… flat!
Summer Nude Lips: All lift the skin tone in a warm, summery feel, taking away any form of pink on their skin.
Winter Nude Lips: All give a rose tone glow, this adds colour to the face rather than being a neutralizing nude like the warmer tones.
If your skin tone is neutral or you are not sure what to choose, I would choose a peach tone nude lip, as it can work with both skin tones – the in between shade from cool to warm.
This will compliment an live base skin, still not looking dull and a pink base skin will benefit by looking warmer than their skin tone.
You will know once you apply a nude lip if it is right for you… Look at what your skin is telling you – lift – or neutralize – and you will get it right every time! If you get the nude lip right in undertone and still are feeling a bit flat, I would say you are a bold lip girl!
Try it this weekend!
