Delta Goodrem, in the spotlight since 15 years-old has been an Australian entertainment fixture for years. As the Oral-B 3D White ambassador gets set to release her new album in the States, we sat down the the superstar singer to talk everything health, beauty and The Voice.
RESCU: You have evolved in front of everyone, but always managed to maintain your own style.
Delta Goodrem: Thank you! I appreciate that.
RESCU: Did you always take advice from people regarding your professional image or did you always have a handle on what you wanted to look like?
Delta Goodrem: I mean it’s funny, I got into music for music, I’m a musician, and so I had to learn everything else. If you asked me explain to me “what chords go into this and this” I’d be like yeah cool! I’d do this and this…”
But then when you get into the industry young you have to learn how to do things like interviews – I’d get so shy and overwhelmed! When it came to style and beauty, at the start, I just always had my own thing.
RESCU: You did have you’re own thing, and it was copied and applauded, and mums were so happy there daughters looked up to daughter.
Delta Goodrem: I take that with great pride and I don’t take that lightly I love the parents! I only ever got into it wanting to be a good role model. I always wanted to make sure I gave off a good message. Now I think in this next chapter I’ve got to be able to come out and all sides of me out now. I’m a woman, I’m turning 30 this year but I think say stylists, or makeup artists or anyone that I would get to know, I tend to find that I’m someone who will listen to what people have to say. Four or five people in a room will tell me what they think and I’ll go, “OK, I see this, and I see that but I’d like to add in this.”
I think that’s how I’ve always done it or I’ll actively find things that I want to do – it’s always been the driver.
RESCU: A big thing that’s happened recently in your evolution of style is the mermaid tresses are gone! And they were such a signature part of your look.
Delta Goodrem: And the ethereal dresses!
For a woman, her hair is such a potent amulet of beauty; you would’ve really had to trust Michael. [Michael Brennan, Delta’s hair stylist]
Delta Goodrem: I did, and I think that a lot have happened when I had started the voice and I felt like I needed to feel light. The year before had been heavy and I needed to feel light and refreshed.
RESCU: As an observer and somebody who has long hair, it would take a lot to cut it and it would be quite a statement. Did you start dressing differently; did you start carrying yourself differently?
Delta Goodrem: Yes, and you know you realise your power isn’t in your hair and that’s what I discovered. Joining the voice people had previous feelings about me and the show shows one side of us too and we’re all multi-layered as humans. So I think that I was chopping again another chapter. I process and I move on.
RESCU: What’s your off-duty routine?
Delta Goodrem: Off-duty I’m really minimal, I’m quite a natural person when I’m not working. I understand when it’s time to work and I love getting dressed up and playing with outfits. When I’m not working, I’m flat shoes and barely any makeup and I let my hair dry naturally at all times.
RESCU: You have stunning teeth, and it doesn’t look like you’ve had any work done.
Delta Goodrem: That’s one of the first things that Oral B checks, you know I had braces when I was a kid. I think people always forget I’m the music girl; I’ve tried really hard with the other stuff. But my highest values are my work, so I’ve always tried to be more aware of the beauty things.
RESCU: You’ve always been healthy, vibrant person. What’s you day on a plate?
Delta Goodrem: I’m a clean living girl. It doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy a glass of wine and a dance and it doesn’t mean that I don’t eat chocolate. I would say that I’m a healthy living person. I wake up a have a smoothie and coffee. It’s got kale, almonds, dates, coconut, flax seeds – Renee [flatmate, Renee Bargh] makes them and she’s really good at them! A super smoothie every morning. Then I exercise. I go to the gym – I love the gym. I enjoy it! If I don’t go to the gym I might do a hip-hop class that week or go to Bikram yoga in an afternoon sometime. Or I might have oatmeal with fruit. Most days I like to have wake up, have my smoothie, go train and do something sporty then off to work.
For lunch, I have a tuna salad. Then I have these chocolate protein balls that curb my sweet cravings. For dinner I normally have salmon with salad.
RESCU: What’s your indulgence food?
Delta Goodrem: Anything sweet! I’ve got a sweet tooth!
What’s you favourite Christmas meal?
Delta Goodrem: I love honey ham, and turkey. Mum’s always done it – I’m not a great cook at all! I’m more creative, I like to clean and decorate! I’m really more the playlist, making sure the house looks good, make sure the decorations are out making sure there’s goodie bags for everyone – I’m that person!
You’re doing a lot of work in the US and you’re about to release a big album there, aesthetically, what do you find to be the big difference between American girls and Australian girls?
Delta Goodrem: There is a difference definitely. I would say I can pick an Australian girl out when I walk into a room – what I love about Aussie girls is that there’s this natural style with a slight-hippie relaxed feeling yet put together beautifully.
Does your management try to American-ise you?
Delta Goodrem: America is a formatted place, but no, you’ve just got to be yourself. As clichéd as that is, it’s true.
RESCU: Do you have any big dreams personally that you hope to reach in the next decade?
Delta Goodrem: Absolutely, but they’re ever evolving, I have dreams I still have a lot of dreams. I’m questioning everything! As long as I’m surrounded by the people I love… I’m on the journey and I’m feeling everything along the way.
