It’s been a great year for fashion – from Fashion Week to movie premieres and red carpets all over the world, we’ve loved every second of ogling the trends as celebs try (and sometimes fail) to make them work. But the red carpet is a very different place to the runway: gowns that look resplendent on a waif-thin model for a twenty-second walk face an entirely different set of challenges in the real world. Flash bulbs, hemlines, room to breathe: it’s a minefield out there.
However, there have been some runaway success stories. Lupita Nyong’o was our style crush for the year (even though her Met Ball gown was a thorough flop); some people have picked her Prada for the Oscars as their best style moment, but we’ve gone with an earlier option that cemented her as one to watch. It was also the year for masculine accents on gowns, with women from Emma Watson to Naomie Harris working coat dresses that showed tailoring with flair.
Some of these were universally acclaimed, and some are a little more contentious. But they all provoked us, delighted us and made us dream of having a fashion moment of our own. What were your top looks of 2014?
