The 70s was the decade of flicked hair, all-American grins, Jerry Hall, disco and David Bowie. It was also one of the biggest fashion influences of the 20th century: mini-skirts by Ossie Clark, the punk of Vivienne Westwood and exciting new fabrics like lurex stormed the scene. It’s been reappearing ever since – and it’s part of the wardrobe of 2014 in a big way.
But getting some 1970s flavour doesn’t mean going out looking like Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver or swathing yourself in coloured fur (so un-PC). It’s about the shapes, the carefree identity and the beginning of a defined ‘city cool’. If you don’t know 70s style, think the late hippie-ism of the 60s beginning to smarten up into the shoulder pads and blue eyeshadow of the 80s. Suede, paisley, bell-bottoms, big shades and disco-influenced style all made an appearance.
So here’s our edit of 70s style in 2014 fashion – but don’t break out that vintage sparkly gold slit-to-there jumpsuit just yet…
