RESCU: Led light facials – what’s all the fuss about?
Monique Bolland: You’ve probably seen or heard of LED light therapy by now. Hand held devices are all over television and the internet, and more and more spas are picking up on this technology as the demand for advanced anti-aging increases.
RESCU: First a bit about light and skin…
Monique Bolland: Different wavebands and colours in light can have specific, and often dramatic, effects on our skin. Exposure to UV light forces your body to protect itself by producing melanin, tanning the skin; blue light can kill off propionibacterium acnes, the prime suspect in teenage and adult acne; babies born with jaundice (yellowing in their skin and eyes) are put under blue bili lights to break down the bilirubin in their skin; and specific bands of infrared light are used for healing and have incredible anti-aging benefits for the skin.
RESCU: Why use light therapy?
Monique Bolland: In a world that’s full of cosmetic surgery, injectables and abrasive skin care, led facials (or phototherapy), offer customers a natural and non-invasive alternative that has dramatic anti-aging effects on the skin.
More and more people are looking to slow the signs of aging without surgery and LED light therapy, like Alkaline’s Omnilux Revive, is the most advanced technology available. The light actually affects the skin at a cellular level, and works on the living cells, deep in the dermis, to provide long lasting results.
RESCU: So how does Omnilux work?
Monique Bolland: Omnilux works by exposing the skin to a very specific waveband of infrared light, for exactly 20 minutes at a time. The light is absorbed by the cells and helps to increase cellular energy, permeability of the cells, and the production and turnover of collagen and elastin in the skin (which hydrate, plump, and give skin it’s elasticity).
More permeable skin cells means Omnilux will enhance the benefits of any home care products you are using as well.
RESCU: What results can I expect?
Monique Bolland: Most clients see an immediate result – their skin appears brighter and plumper, the tone more even, the youthful glow back. For lasting results, a series of treatments is needed, and results will vary depending on lifestyle and homecare. Studies have shown up to a 74% reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, and the clarity and texture of skin is dramatically improved. Most clinics will give advice on how to prolong your results. Omnilux is particularly effective for sun damaged and ageing skin.
RESCU: So what can Omnliux be used for?
Monique Bolland: Most people use Omnilux for anti-aging and skin rejuvenation. It can also be used to successfully treat post-surgical scarring, acne scarring, sun damage, rosacea, and to prolong the effects of Botox. LED light is ideal for wound healing as it decreases swelling and bruising, increases circulation to the area to heal, and encourages cellular turnover.
Research is being done into the benefits of LED phototherapy on depression and mood disorders as the LED light stimulates the release of endorphins, your fee-good hormones.
RESCU: Is there any downtime?
Monique Bolland: Unlike lazers and IPL, there is no downtime with Omnilux or any other form of LED light facial. Your skin may be a little bit more photosensitive than usual post treatment, so just make sure you wear SPF 30+ when leaving the house.
