Cellulite, also referred to as ‘thigh dimples’ is a term that refers to the layer of fat that gives our skin a lumpy or dimpled appearance and is predominately found on the upper arms, buttocks, and thighs. Cellulite is a very common and normal condition that can strike people of all shapes and sizes. It is estimated that 90 per cent of women experience some form of cellulite in their life (Reference: Fitness Mercola). Whilst cellulite is not a major threat to our health, this aesthetic condition can be a major complaint of my female clients and can impact the way people feel about themselves. Below are my natural health tips for cellulite.
What causes cellulite?
Cellulite is a condition that effects the connective tissue of the body with fat deposits under the skin causing the dimpled appearance. There are various factors and causes that can increase your chances of getting cellulite, which include lifestyle, genetic and hormonal factors. Some of these causes and factors include poor circulation, hormonal imbalance, age and gender.
5 Natural Tips and Remedies for cellulite:
Below are my suggestions to help treat and prevent cellulite.
1. Dry Brushing
Dry brushing is my first recommendation when treating cellulite. It stimulates circulation in all underlying organs and tissues, especially in the small blood capillaries of your skin. The best time to dry brush is first thing in the morning before you shower. Dry brushing with a natural bristle brush allows the bristles to work deeper into the skin and muscles, stimulating circulation.
2. Lymphatic Massage
Lymphatic massage is another great tool to help combat cellulite. The lymphatic and circulatory system are responsible for removing waste from the body. Supporting and enhancing these systems through massage may be useful in treating cellulite and increasing circulation throughout the body.
3. Exercise
Taking up regular exercise is essential for optimal health and may help treating cellulite. Regular active movement helps increase circulation, the elimination of waste in the body and tones the muscles. Implement 30 minutes of exercise on a daily basis. Exercises such as body weight squats and lunges can be great in toning the legs and buttocks.
4. Bone Broth
Enjoying a cup of nourishing bone broth is not just great for your immune system and gut health but may also help improve the connective tissue of your skin. Bone broth is high in the nutrient collagen, which is essential in skin regeneration and repair. Drinking a cup or two of organic and well prepared bone broth every day can ensure you are consuming enough collagen rich foods in your diet.
5. Herbal medicine
There are some fantastic herbs that can help increase circulation and may be useful in treating cellulite. These can be added to your diet in the form of dried, fresh or tea form and can be put together as in herbal tincture form*. These herbs include:
– Gotu Kola: is a healing and alterative herb that may help strengthen connective tissue in the body.
– Burdock: is a fantastic cleansing and alterative herb.
– Nettle: is a very nutritive herb that is also a circulatory stimulant.
* Herbs may be taken in the form of a tea or tincture form. Herbal tinctures are only available with a prescription from your Naturopath or Herbalist. A qualified practitioner will ensure your medication; supplements or disease state does not interact with the herbs. When an herbalist prescribes herbal medicine they consider one’s constitution: age, allergies, sensitiveness, robustness, size, temperature, current status of health and personality. Always remember to tell your practitioner if you’re pregnant or breast-feeding.
