No matter what industry your in, the relationship you have with your boss can mean the difference between kicking career goals, or being kicked straight to the back of the unemployment line. Get the low down on how to turn even the most difficult boss into your number one fan in six easy ways…By Katie Martlew
FACT# A difficult relationship with a boss is one of the most common causes of workplace stress.
1. Go above and beyond the call of duty. Go beyond the call of duties listed on your job description, even if it includes menial tasks that you believe are beneath you. This will show your boss that you aren’t afraid to roll your sleeves up and get the job done properly, for the greater good of the company at large.
2. Share your ideas. Instead of wasting downtime on Facebook or Twitter, put it to good use by thinking of things you could do to improve or advance the business. Even if they don’t choose to run with your suggestions, it will prove to them you’re ambitious, career focused, and full of fresh ideas.
3. Remember, your boss is only human. Just like you, your boss can have good days; bad days and can make mistakes. If your boss snaps at you or seems hostile, ask a fellow co-worker if they noticed your boss’ behaviour towards you. You may find, you’re over-reacting, or that your boss might just be stressed or just generally having a bad day. If your boss seems to be in a particularly bad mood, it might be helpful to ask them politely if you’ve done something to upset them, which will open the lines of communication.
4. Keep a sunny disposition. Always try to keep a positive, upbeat attitude, even if this means you have to fake it. Everyone has his or her bad days, but nobody wants to be around a negative co-worker, including your boss. Also, it’s a known fact that laughter is the best instant stress reducer, so try to smile your through even the not-so-good days to help reduce workplace stress. Your boss (and your co-workers) will take notice.
5. Accept responsibility for your mistakes. We all make mistakes, some small, some significant–but it’s the way we deal with them that can set us apart from the rest. Openly admitting you’ve made a mistake, and coming up with an action plan on how to rectify it, or move forward–shows good character.
6. Show initiative. Do some thorough research on the company. Ask your boss if there are any training opportunities offered through the company that will help make you a better asset to them. If not, improve your skill-set by reading books or taking online courses. This will not only prove your commitment to the company and help you shine above the rest, but also put you in good stead for a future promotion.
