Every year the red carpet season brings a whole new set of rules to the makeup world. Golden Globes are always the first on the calendar, and serve as the trend-setter for the rest of the 2015 awards.
This year we saw a collection of bold lips, classic Hollywood glamour (Felicity Jones, anyone?) and neutral, flawless nudes which were definitely the go-to look. Here’s my top 3 picks for the 2015 Golden Globes red carpet beauty; glamorous, fresh, and best of all – easy to recreate!
Jennifer Lopez
‘Effortless Glam’
The Look: Everything ties together beautifully and hair matches the flow of the dress. Not many smokey eyes on the red carpet and I love how blended it is, making it more effortless. It also is shaped into a soft wing giving an uplifted feel.
The skin is soft and fresh, toning down the severity of what a smokey eye can be.
How To Get It: This look was all about the smokey eye. My tip is to use a soft eyeliner pencil, one that can be smudged, like a kohl.
Line the eyes a little heavy than you usually would. Then with a brush, smudge the pigment up into the eye socket, concentrating more on the outer area in an upturned angle to create J Lo’s lift. This is your stencil and base.
Then, apply your shadow over the top, following the same shape.. You will use less now you have a base – less fallout! Don’t forget the lower lash line, where your shadow is wider in length that usual, this gives the overall smokey effect! Apply a light shade on the inner tear duct to create light.
Leslie Mann
‘Playful Love’
The Look: The use of tones from the yellow gown to the Orange red bold lip is extremely fresh and playful. A bold lip alone can look very, just that… Alone.
Leslie has opted for a fresh cheek to match, pushing up her apple of the cheek to create a youthful appearance. Her eyes are not overshadowing the lip – always one focus is best.
The very 2015 hair trend of the side sweep with curls definitely suits the overall playful chic vibe.
How To Get It: When a look is all about the lip, it’s important to work back from that shade and area. The eyes should not pull focus, but be defined. A simple contour, like a bronzer type shade, is perfect to create a stronger socket and shape for the eyes. Smoke up the bronzer around lash lines for top and bottom. When a bold lip is in play, the lashes are a big balance area, so play up your lashes and lash line, a liquid line works very well – applied thinly along lash line and then for the outer area, open your eye and place a very tiny dot where you want your line to end, close again and join the line together.
Keeping your eyes open when applying a wing to an eyeliner gives you the perfect finish point with no dips that you can get if you don’t open your eye. Using your fingertip, press in your lipstick colour to your lips, this melts in pigment for a lasting stain. If necessary, apply lip liner after lipstick application to create the perfect pout. Blush is a must with a bold lip, otherwise it can look very lonely, choose a similar shade and apply to apple of cheek for a great lift for the face.
Diane Kruger
The Look: Love love LOVE this minimalistic red carpet approach! The makeup looks as if it belongs to the face, not sitting on top competing.
You don’t have to pack on makeup to make it a red carpet effect, soft blended tones work best. The subtle tie in to her silver gown on the mobile eyelid as a pop is stunning and teaming a soft nude pink lip lifts the skin seeing the dress isn’t a bright colour.
Because the hair is so elegant, the soft makeup design creates a very Hollywood effect.
How To Get It: This look is all about that glowing skin. Don’t forget to prime, I usually use two – one that is mattifying on the T-Zone and a highlighting one on the outer areas, frontal bones… This allows your foundation to be the best it can be in light and longevity. The eyes are a simple wash of a deeper grey shade around the lash lines and socket, while a more metallic silver is placed on the mobile eye lid as a pop.
The nude pink lip can also be used as a cream blush, by placing a couple of light dots on the apple of the cheek.
Oh so fresh!
My bonus round pick is Helen Mirren… Lady in red.
No matter what your age, you can still create glamour!
