Every season we see beauty trends splashed across magazines, blogs, and forums as well as from cosmetic brands that are all inspired by catwalks around the world.
We all know that some are so crazy and un-wearable for the everyday women, but they give us a creative aspiration to try new colours and products that we may not normally have in our makeup routine.
The main thing to always think about is, will this trend only suit one statement outfit, or can I wear this with several fashion pieces?
Does this trend work with my colouring in skin, hair, and eyes?
Is it bringing out my best features?
If you answered no to any of these, maybe the trend in question may not be the best for you – there are so many per season, don’t worry, you’ll find one for you!
2013 has opened with a bang already in beauty!
I feel women are slowly becoming more experimental, trying new shades and accenting areas like their brows, lips and lashes, which to me are the most feminine and classic areas to make up!
With products evolving, textures becoming easier to blend and the new multi-use factor of makeup these days, everyone can be a make-up artist and create beautiful looks.
Always remember when seeing trends on a catwalk, that doesn’t mean you have to re-create every single element of the look, but what you should do, as a make-up artist would, is break the look down and use tones and shape from the look and piece these onto your face so they then suit your facial features.
MB Pro Tip: Always experiment!
Even top makeup artists need to try new things and experiment with colours, blending and creating shapes with make-up.
Don’t try a new trend on the night of a big occasion, know what you are applying matches your lifestyle, and colouring!
There are a few fab trends for 2013, but one I love!
It is that of a Rose Gold, or Peach style smokey eye…
We have seen a big decline in the all black smokey eye for a while with bronze, navy and berry shades winning for the ‘always asked for’ make-up look.
Take a look at the below shots straight from the runway;
This look comes in so many different depths of Rose or Peach, which is great as it then can suit more women. The only ladies it would not suit is if the skin has irritations and a lot of redness through it – this means avoiding all things pink to balance out what is happening on the skin.
Some of the best eye makeup is when the shades chosen to be worn on the eye contrasts with the eye colour, making your eyes pop!
With this in mind, you can see that this shade and varied depths used can contrast against all eye colours making your eye stand out – maybe just make sure you aren’t to tired and have red eyes and all will be great.
MB Pro Tip; Don’t forget about thinking like a makeup artist and trying to have a multi-use factor in your makeup.
A simple blush shade you may have in your makeup bag could be the answer for this look. A wash across the mobile eyelid with slightly more depth at the lash lines and outer corner can be one way of creating this new trend, or simply wearing the shade only at the bottom or top lash line, keeping it concentrated.
If you are thinking, this could look like a disaster, try using a bronzer or a more neutral tone shadow or blush to contour your eyes first, creating shape and lift. Then add the rose gold/peach shade over the top, concentrating on inner, and the central eyelid for more focus.
This look can be as natural, or as smokey as you desire, you just have to try it!
I love the Face Accents in Hibiscus from Aveda!
With a very slight sheen and 3 shades to mix together for your own tailor made tone on this look, plus perfect for a blush or the lighter shades as a highlighter.
Another trend, one that has been present on runway’s around the world, as well as red carpets, such as Nicole Ritchie’s look from the Golden Globes, is pops or washes of blue across the eye.
We have been seeing just blue eyeliner, some with slight wings, or pale, sky blue matte washes across eyelids and only blue shadow or liner applied on the lower lashes – all can work with the right shade of blue for you.
Depending on the outfit or your personality, there are so many ways to wear blue either being subtle or loud, add some colour to your look and see the reactions you get.
The deeper the blue like navy or an electric blue can be the most natural. It may come across as dark, but it will not be bright and full on like an aqua for example.
If you are more a natural kind of girl, but would like to try this shade, try the left image, line the eyes with your black pencil, then apply a navy or midnight style blue over the top. The shadow will attach to the formula of the pencil, giving it a great sheen and contrast from the black.
Wearing the blue alone is great for green or brown eyes, but for blue eyes, the black pencil applied first gives extra depth and contrast so the eyes still pop.
Pale skins, like redheads, can look great with a very light, matte shade of sky blue, washed across the mobile eyelid, it freshens and cools their warm hair tone and gives a great focus points to the face.
For the more daring, use a liner in a blue shade and line bottom and top lash lines, either keep it bold or smudge with a brush out to a natural fade. For even more wow factor, add an aqua shadow over the liner, this create a bond and the two tones together will brighten the look, creating the ultimate modern blue shadow look.
My favourite pigments for colour are from Vani-T, Color Crystals!
They are loose dusts, but highly pigmented, amazing by themselves or over eye primers, liners, or other cream shadows to gain a higher pigment. Use wet to create a high shine liner, amazing for extra focus and a few different levels of blue to choose from.
MB Pro Tip: Blue is not for everyone, you need the confidence to wear it well.
If you keep it concentrated as a liner, or over your black liner, maybe try using it only in the lower inner rim/waterline or as a pop on the centre of the eyelid, you will always look modern – please no blue to the brow people!
Trends will come and then they go, but they sure are fun having a play while they are here, try one that excites you and see how it feels with a new look!
