Pack your bags and fuel up the car. With two long weekends coming up, we’re taking you on the ultimate cultural and foodie mini break and NO it’s not Melbourne. The nation’s capital gets a bad wrap but as a former Canberran, I thought I’d give you a taste of how to experience Canberra as a easy and luxurious destination. Perfect for families and couples, 48 hours in the ACT can soothe even the most jangled of high power nerves.
My top 5 things to do in Canberra…
1. Book yourself at Park Hyatt Canberra. This historic and art deco gem is one of the best hotel experiences in the world. Elegant interiors beautifully restored and maintained, first class ‘diplomatic’ service by exceptionally trained concierge and beautifully appointed rooms and suites to suit your needs. I’ve stayed in the Curtin Suite and more recently in a King room and have to say am always impressed with the attention to detail. Whilst you are there, make sure you reserve a spot at the popular and traditional high tea service. Amazing.
2. Food Glorious Food. Canberra is home to Parliament and foreign Embassies and to cater to this discerning crowd, the food scene is quite simply great. From high end dining like Ottoman Turkish Restaurant to cool cafes (must check out the fabulous 38 Espresso on Trevillion Quay, Kingston) Canberra is a treasure trove of good eats. A trip to the famous Silo Bakery in Kingston is also highly recommended. For people watching, Manuka (pronounced Maaa-na-ka) is where the beautiful people shop, dine and generally hang out.
3. Have a cultural experience. Culture Vultures already know that Canberra is home to infinite number of Cultural destintation like the National Gallery of Australia, National Portrait Gallery the High Court and the National Library. Other notable places of interest include New and Old Parliament House, the Arbourtariam, The Carillion and of course The War Memorial.
4. Spend time with the family. Family Friendly activities are part of Canberra’s tourist charm. Rent a bike or pedal boat on the foreshore of Lake Burley Griffin and enjoy the endless and effortless bike tracks that wind past all the hot spots and offer the perfect way to explore the city. As a totally planned city, the famed bike tracks and relaxing vistas are perfect for young families and teenagers.
On rainy days check out the Aquarium, Questacon Science Centre (my absolute favorite place to go for hands on fun) and check out the NGA’s list of child friendly tours, talks and activities. In Spring you’ll love Floriade and in warmer months, Canberra’s parks and lake foreshore are a family holiday heaven.
5. Wine region at your doorstep. With the Hyatt as your base, book in a wine tour to sample the regions booming wine region. Small but acclaimed, the wineries around Lake George, Yass and Collector have gained enormous credibility and won over critics. The Hyatt Concierge can arrange private or group tours and tastings. Most notable wineries to visit are: Lerida Estate, Brindabella Hills Winery and Lark Hill Winery.
