All vastly different, but stylish in their own way, we celebrate mother style with a nod to todays’ most influential.
The Natural: Jessica Alba
Layers: There is a definite layering effect to Jess’s style. And this is what makes it so darn simple to replicate. Always using a simple, classic denim jean or cargo pant as a base to each outfit, Jess often pairs these back with a simple white t-shirt, a loose shirt or jacket and a scarf – or all of the above! Her use of pashmina’s and cotton and knit scarves are a staple style look for her, and one that dresses up any mum-on-the-run outfit!
Loose Fits: If any mum can afford to show off their body, it’s Jessica. But in her elegant day-to-day style she chooses to only show a little bit of skin via a cuffed cargo pant, cuffed cotton shirt or ankle grazing culottes – keeping her silhouette chic and comfortable. Fabrics range from natural cottons to cashmere and silk, steering clear of heavy wool or polyester that can create a bulky, unflattering effect.
Neutrals: One peek in Jessica’s wardrobe is sure to reveal an array of neutrals. Jess always looks so easily put together because she is clever enough to stick to a base palette of earthy tones that constantly co-ordinate; army green, white, tan, grey and navy. Choosing a base palette of five tones is a winning way to mindlessly throwing something on at the last minute without any coordinating prowess required.
Jessica’s Style Lesson: Invest in natural fabrics in neutral tones, always having a high-rotation of tran-seasonal scarves on the go.
The Classic: Duchess of Cambridge
Dresses: Oft on-duty when she is photographed, The Duchess of Cambridge sticks to an ever-rotating array of dresses that marry two of her most defining style factors: femininity and form. A fan of a knee-length, light dress, Kate plays with florals and fresh pastel colours on floaty, generally high-necked styles. This affords her confidence in sticking to a formula that works, and effortless grace from every angle.
Heels: When not running around after Prince George – and doting on newborn Princess Charlotte – Kate calls on a heel to take her from A-to-B, but she doesn’t teeter to ridiculous heights here, instead sticking to a low kitten heel or even a widely copied wedge style – often wearing the same shoes for several events. If the shoe fits…
Grooming: Of course Kate has a team of aesthetic experts tending to her nails, skin, hair and body at any given time, but if it wasn’t for her poise and stature, all may come unhinged. Catherine’s true style staple is her elegance, and this is not something reserved only for a royal. Basic grooming in hair, nails and skin is the foundation of any stylish mother and a personal investment that is worth the extra twenty minutes applying a hair mask, two minutes taken cleansing each evening or 30 seconds filing those forlorn nails.
The Duchess of Cambridge’s Style Lesson: Start with elegant grooming and stick with a staple signature of feminine shapes and flattering heels.
The Minimalist: Angelina Jolie
Black and White: A big fashion news day will be the one when Angelina opts for a neon drop-crutch pant. Don’t hold your breath people. Angelina is a maven of simplicity, opting for black and white – with an occasional nod to navy or cream – each and every time. And this works for her. She is on the go constantly – with film, family and philanthropic commitments taking her around the globe – so her style template compliments this hectic schedule. Uniquely modest and understated in her style approach, Angelina really exemplifies a no-fuss, no-frill style that is universally fashionable.
Functional Fabric: This frequent flyer, and mother to small children, needs fabrics that move with her – and move fast. Angelina is obviously a big fan of silks, cashmere, light knits, cotton and tailored wool pieces and is rarely photographed in tricky patterns and textures. Her formula for functionality extends to her footwear, with a trademark ballet flat in summer, or knee-high boot in winter keeping her astride of the style stakes.
Accessories: Angelina’s silhouette is extremely pared back – both in colour and cut. Where she solidifies her style signature is with her accessories. There is always a chic designer leather handbag or backpack being toted, and her statement sunglasses are always simple, but heaven-sent in their craftsmanship. With any simple ensemble, accenting with high-quality accessories is essential to take it from ho-hum to high style.
Angelina Jolie’s Style Lesson: Keep your tones, textures and shapes simple and add a personable touch with high-quality accessories.
