At just 25 years old, model, Robyn Lawley is an international cover girl, has her own swimsuit line and food blog, Robyn Lawley Eats and has recently launched her first cookbook.
An advocate for positive body image in the modelling industry, we sat down with the mogul-in-the-making to talk everything from off-duty beauty to her best foodie tips and even Elle Macpherson.
RESCU: We can imagine you’ve had a lot of “pinch me” moments. What has been the most significant for you so far?
Robyn Lawley: I think meeting [photographer] Stephen Miesel was definitely a “pinch me” moment because he’s so elusive. Ill probably never get to see him again in my life unless I shoot with him, so that was definitely a career highlight. Also, I think a few times when I’ve been to the ballet for example and they’ve given me front row seats and it’s just like, “Oh wow, this is awesome!”
RESCU: You’re in New York one day and Mykonos the next – what are your travel beauty must-haves?
Robyn Lawley: It’s so dehydrating on the plane when you travel your skin just really suffers. Lots of moisturisers. I usually have three different types in my bag when I go on the plane. I have a really nice Aesop one, an SKII one, and AN olive oil concoction I made myself.
For my hair, I use treatments and I’ll always have a mask – especially if I don’t know what the shoot’s going to be like. Sometimes they can really just torture your hair and then you have to work the next day. If they use oil on your hair that’s the worst ’cause you’re like, “Oh my God, I’m going to have to shampoo it one thousand times!”
RESCU: So, how exactly do you up-keep your signature long, healthy hair between shoots?
Robyn Lawley: I use the Pantene 7 Day Smooth and Manageable treatment masks and I use the Pantene Ice Shine Shampoo and Conditioner. The new range is really awesome for repairing the damage without making it crazy heavy and I have so much hair, I definitely don’t need it to be heavier.
RESCU: What’s your go-to hair style for your off duty days?
Robyn Lawley: It’s so heavy so the heaviness determines that it hangs loose! It just breaks hair-ties when I try to tie it up or it gives me headaches. I just wear my hair out like a hippy most days!
RESCU: Tell us what its like to be aligned with Elle McPherson, “The Body”, herself?
Robyn Lawley: That was a huge honour, Elle McPherson’s one hot lady – I’m not gonna say no to that! She’s so iconic, I love her. Her early 90s her sports illustrated stuff is so hot. She’s just such a cool model and her body was banging. I always thought she was a lot smaller than me though… You know when she did that movie? [The Edge] She was a little bit curvier, I thought she looked really sexy -she was uber hot.
RESCU: If you were to give you younger self advice before entering the modelling industry what would it be?
Robyn Lawley: To my 15 or 16 year old self I would say, “Don’t diet. Stay away from the diet! Did you know about plus size modelling?” I could have stayed away from years of diets and I would have been way further along in my career now.
RESCU: Congratulations on the recent launch of your first cook book, Robyn Lawley Eats. What’s your food philosophy?
Robyn Lawley: Thank you very much. My food philosophy is eat when you can, wherever you can in the world. I think I travel for food. It’s one of those awesome gifts. Every country is different and so vibrant and it’s the gift you get every single day. Everyone loves to eat, everyone. So that’s my food philosophy, relax a bit and enjoy the small things in life.
RESCU: Do you have any hot tips for the best foodie places in New York?
Robyn Lawley: In New York I think the easiest places to go if you want a mecca of food places is Williamsburg in Brooklyn. So many amazing restaurants there, because Brooklyn’s the new place for food.
RESCU: With such a busy schedule, how do you start your day on a plate?
Robyn Lawley: I usually start with eggs. I like scrambled eggs with cherry tomato and onion and garlic.
I get everything from the local markets. I’m really big on that, I love good produce. Ethical eggs and good quality vegetables that haven’t been sitting in the supermarket for days or weeks.
RESCU: So you favour organic foods?
Robyn Lawley: Definitely. You have to in America – I’m dealing with genetically modified food here!
RESCU: Lastly, what’s your pick off swimsuit cuts for our imminent summer season?
Robyn Lawley: I have this one piece zipper suit that I love just because its really comfortable and sexy and so easy to get in and out of! It’s not like when you’re trying to get out of a tight suit when it’s wet, this ones not like that.
