Is that a rosy glow on your cheeks or the drying effects of Winter? The lower temperatures and reduced humidity can cause your skin to lose moisture making it dry, itchy and scaly. Rescu. keeps your skin looking peachy all Winter with these top skin tips.
Upgrade your moisturiser
A richer moisturiser is required during Winter to nourish the deeper layers of your skin. Try an oil-based one instead of water-based. Products that contain avocado oil, mineral oil, primrose oil and almond oil are great as they aren’t as greasy as other oils and won’t clog your pores. Brands we like include Trilogy; Bergman; Korres and Elemis. Don’t forget your hands and feet, slather them in a good moisturiser and wear gloves and socks whilst you sleep- Johnson’s 24 Hour Moisture Body Lotion is one we’ve reviewed and recommended.
Keep it balmy
Dry lips are a problem for a lot of people during Winter and it’s natural to lick them to moisten them. Stop it! Licking your lips will only make them worse. Keep lip balm with you at all times. Buy several and keep one in your pocket, desk drawer, bathroom and purse. They come in funky colours and flavours so there is no excuse for not finding the right one for you. Mix it up and have a different flavour in each place! Good brands to look for: Blistex, Lipstick Queen, Bonne Bell, Lucas Paw Paw ointment and Burt’s Bees.
Cool it
On a cold Winter morning, a steaming hot bath or shower may feel luxurious, but the heat of the water breaks down the skin’s lipid barriers. Cool the water temperature, and try a shower gel or bath soak that is infused with sweet almond or jojoba oil to keep the skin nourished. These scents also promote relaxation so breathe deep.
Protect yourself
Sunscreen all year round is imperative in Australia, not just for preventing skin cancer, but also to stop ageing and sun damage. Look for products that offer an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply your sunscreen before you leave the house every day. Use one with an added moisturiser, and if you want a sun-kissed look, get one with a tint. Good brands to look for: True Solutions (we think this one is the best); Invisible Zinc; Hissy Fit and for the budget concious, there is an excellent option with Nivea.
Exfoliate weekly
Removing the top layer of dead cells on your face stimulates cell production in your skin. You only need to do this once a week by gently scrubbing your face with a soft washcloth. Purchase a good exfoliating lotion with natural ingredients, such as The Body Shop’s Seaweed Pore-Cleansing Exfoliator, available at www.thebodyshop.com.au. Or try making one yourself by blending together natural yogurt and oatmeal. Your skin will look refreshed and feel smoother.
Keep up the water levels
Drinking plenty of water will give your skin a natural, healthy glow from the inside out. If a bottle of chilled water is just too cold, try a brothy soup or make a cup of herbal tea instead. Feed your skin Make sure you still eat healthy meals and snacks, and don’t succumb to too many wintery comfort foods. You’ll feel better for eating healthier options and your skin will thank you for staying away from greasy and sugary foods.
