The Victoria’s Secret show is debuting soon, with a few Australian names making their debut onstage, and they’ve started giving hints of what the show will do.
Six sketches have been leaked from each of the show’s six ‘collections’: divisions of the lingerie into thematic sections, based on price point and colour. The themes often don’t have much to do with the lingerie, but who cares?
This is what we know. The six themes this year are Gilded Angel, Dream Girl, Exotic Traveller, Fairy Tale, University of Pink, and Angel Ball.
University of Pink is for VS’s offshoot, cheaper line, PINK, which is targeted at younger consumers in colleges and schools, and tends to involve simpler, sweeter designs. Cara Delevingne modelled for them last year, as did Jessica Hart (before she put her foot in it by insulting Taylor Swift, who’ll be headlining the show again in 2014).
We predict lots of college cliches, complete with law books, letter jackets and themed knee-high socks – like Elle Woods but without as much clothing.
The more senior lines are more seriously designed, and involve heavier harnesses and decorations. The Angels are renowned for having to wear the weightiest decorations, which often weigh considerable amounts and are many feet high.
We got a preview of the fitting process this week when Lily Donaldson’s fitting was shown on Women’s Wear Daily for her Fairy Tale look; Angels often take part in each of the senior sections. WWD showed Donaldson having extensive pink fairy wings fitted onto a pink shoulder-high corset piece.
It was no accident that Victoria’s Secret chose to show the fitting for that one outfit: it’s covered in 150,000 Swarovski crystals of various colours, and is both technically challenging and very heavy, weighing in at a stunning 19kg. However, Donaldson is a pro, and said her main worry was, prosaically, falling over.
One fragment of the wing, a designer told WWD, took over five hours to make. The main focus, however, isn’t on the Fairy Tale portion; it’s on the final collection, the Angel Ball, which will apparently be based on the fashion from Truman Capote’s infamous Black and White Ball from 1966.
Guests already know that’s the focus because they’ve been told to adhere to its dress code, black tie, masks and all.
Will you be looking out for the six collections onstage at the Victoria’s Secret show? We’re already sure the Angel’s Ball will be the knock-out…
