Research shows that libidos tend to drop in colder weather. It’s to do with hibernation; many mammals choose to wait out the colder months in warm slumber, and humans tend to get sleepier and less frisky as a result of their biology.
The problem? Women in particular don’t orgasm very well unless they’re warm!
So here are RESCU’s cold-busting tips for your winter bedroom. Rug up and read on.
Spend The Whole Day In Bed
If it’s too cold to get out of bed, why bother? Stock the sides of the bed with food, treats and entertainment, and spend the day – probably a weekend – snuggling, reading, feeding each other and having glorious orgasms.
The lasting body warmth and continued nakedness will have you both at your libido peak, and it’s as close to hibernation as you can get without losing six months.
Use Heating Lubricant
Durex and others make lubes which heat up upon application, creating pretty unique sensations in your intimate areas. It’s activated by your own body heat, and will start to warm as it’s massaged onto the body.
This will be particularly vivid if you’ve spent the entire day being cold!
As always, do a spot test beforehand and only apply in small doses, otherwise you might find yourself in a hotter situation than you anticipated!
Cook Together
There’s nothing like making the most of a cold day by crowding around some hot food – and it can be a deeply sensual experience.
Prepare a meal together that will steam you right up. Heat some fondue; bake a cake and feed each other the icing; hell, roast a chicken if you like.
The key sexual part of this warming activity is getting a little messy and finger-licking. Insist on a lot of bodily contact while preparing it – show them how to properly slice something, for instance. Have a picnic on the floor with your food, and don’t insist on manners. Lick and daub and bite away, and see where it takes you.
A tip: avoid spicy food. If you’re going to be putting your hands on sensitive areas later, you do NOT want chili lurking on your fingers.
Go Outdoors
This is only for the daring, possibly exhibitionist and willing to venture minor frostbite.
If you have a secluded garden or verandah, consider wrapping yourselves up in a duvet or a series of blankets and getting down in the cold air itself. You can even involve a tent if you’re keen on making it more intimate.
You may feel slightly like Bear Grylls, and it’s definitely not for everybody, but it will definitely make the sex an adventure.
Make A Fort
We’re aware you’re not five any more – but there’s something delicious about being inside a blanket-fort, and nobody can make the rules as to what you do in there.
Make it warm and cosy; hang up fairy lights, cover the floor in pillows and blankets, and then crawl inside together. Clothes are definitely optional.
(This is not for you if you have small children who’ll be inclined to explore the exciting blanket-castle which has suddenly appeared in their living room.)
Fool Around In A Car
It’s a staple of the movies – the steamed-up foggy window pulled up somewhere isolated.
The good thing about cars these days? They all generally come with heating. Go driving, find a nice secluded spot, and warm yourselves up in the most energetic way possible. In Australian summer this is generally a sticky and sweaty affair, but in winter it’s much less so, though you still need a pretty expansive back seat so you won’t feel like a cramped 17-year-old again.
Just don’t do it anywhere you’ll be likely to be discovered by inquisitive cops.
Get In The Shower
I’ve done a column elsewhere about the do’s and don’ts of having sex in the shower, but if you’re freezing your extremities off, this is a lovely way to warm up and have fun at the same time.
Remember that hands and feet which have recently been cold will often sting and burn when placed under hot water. Warm them gently first before you get under the water, otherwise you’ll be in pain rather than swooning with lust.
Enjoy your winter!
