The Stylist’s Guide To Off-Duty Dressing

Emma Read

Fashion Stylist

To a majority of us, ‘off-duty’ equates to sloth in the wardrobe department. Deal me some Netflix and chill on a Sunday and I’ll raise you a grey marle-on-marle sweatshirt and trackpants, jailbreak-style – only elastic waists are welcome to this party. But as Karl Largerfeld famously said, ‘Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life so you bought some sweatpants.’ Whilst I’m not quite yet ready to bin my Bonds in light of his disdain, there is a refined light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to off-duty dressing – and yes, you can keep the sweats in amongst it all. Whip your weekend wear into shape with my top ten casual hits.

1. The Logo Sweat

Eliminate bland with a snappy word or two emblazoned across your chest – the simplest way to boot your sweatshirts out of their usual comfort zone. Pair it back with skinny denim and white sneakers for a breezy brunch look.

Etre-Cecile-Sweatshirt

ÊTRE CÉCILE Cotton Sweatshirt, $152 from style bop

2. The Leather Jacket

The age-old off duty outerwear. A leather jacket is a non-negotiable – throw it over anything and everything for instant fashion cred.

Witchery-Jacket

Witchery Leather Biker Jacket, $599.95

3. Slouchy Denim & Trousers

Feeling a little dusty? Exchange those track pants for slouchy denim or a man-style trouser instead – add a knit and a sneaker for polish in a snap.

Country-Road-Trousers

Country Road Wrap Detail Pants, $59.96

MIH-Jeans

MIH Tomboy Jeans, $295 from Style Bop

4. The Knit Dress

When cozy is all you can deal with, the knit dress is key – layer it up over a white shirt, add a belt, a boot and boom: model-off-duty done and dusted.

Iris-and-Ink-Dress

Iris & Ink Merino Wool Knit Dress, $215 from The Outnet

5. The Trench Coat

Take cues from a million tastemakers before you – really, could Audrey ever be wrong? Wrap it over the simplest of basics for instant chic.

David-Lawrence-Trench

David Lawrence Kelsey Trench, $246.75

6. The LWD (Little Weekend Dress)

A little volume never hurt anybody – particularly if you’re scrubbing up on a weekend. Go for simple neutrals and ease it up with a flat.

Country-Road-Dress-(1)

Country Road Flutter Sleeve Wedge Dress, $149

7. The White Jean

White jeans = the freshmaker. Go tonal in fresh neutrals for a fashion wake-up call all over.

Frame-Jeans

Frame Denim Le Skinny de Jeanne Crop Jeans, $278 from Net-A-Porter

8. The Silk Shirt

Whilst they may make the odd appearance in the office, a casual silk button-down moonlights easily into casuals. Pair it back with denim or a simple A-line skirt for a move into relaxation mode.

Marcs-Silk-Shirt

Marcs Sofia Silk Shirt, $179

9. The Cuban Heeled Boot

These boots were made for walkin’ – to brunch, right? Add a little Isabel Marant-esque ease to a denim + white tee combo with an accessory nod to Americana.

Tony-Bianco-Boots

Tony Bianco Firenze Boots, $219.95

10. The Luxe Sneaker

A little after-hours scruffy hair is fine to deal with on a Saturday – but a scuffed-up sloppy sneaker screams tired. Indulge in a statement sneaker to up the ante on your casuals.
