Two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett and her husband Andrew Upton, creative director of the Sydney Theatre Company, are selling their breathtaking waterfront home in idyllic Hunters Hill.
The couple, who have three children; Dashiell (thirteen), Roman (ten), Ignatius (seven) and new baby Edith, are said to be selling in preparation for their migration to the US later this year, when Andrew Upton’s position at the Sydney Theatre Company comes to an end. Domain gave us a peek into the gorgeous home.
The historic sandstone home built in 1877, ‘Bulwarra’, is expected to break the lower north shore price record of $22.5 million (a Mosman waterfront mansion sold in 2007).
Built on 3642 square metres of land, the house sits on one of the suburb’s largest blocks. The property’s agent, Ken Jacobs of Christie’s International (who recently sold James Packer’s Vaucluse home for over $60 million) expects the home to attract a lot of interest.
The couple purchased the home in 2005 for $10 million and have renovated extensively through designs by architects Nadine Alwill and Dr. Stephen Lesiuk, adding an additional, self-contained residence underneath the pool, and almost doubled the historic home’s floor space. The grounds of the propery, designed by Sydney landscape designer Will Dangar, include sweeping, jacaranda scattered lawns and a championship tennis court.
For a bit of historical context, the nineteenth century home, originally known as ‘Erigola’, was first built by brick manufacturer Herbert Oswin Weynton. It was sold to the chairman of Arnotts, Halse Rogers Arnott, twenty seven years later for a staggering £750. Five years later, the home was sold for £900 to Hunters Hill alderman Charles Adnam Fairland, who’s family held onto it until 1958.
The agent is expected to commence taking expressions of interest in September this year.
