You’ve been breezing around in a caftan for months now, but reality bites – Fall has officially hit. As bittersweet as it is to watch that tan fade, there are some upsides – you can actually dress, right? The jackets, the coats, the knits – time to trade up and accelerate into next season with our guide on what to invest in and what to store.
ADD:
Khaki
The most underrated of the neutrals is bumping out grey-on-grey and white-on-white as the new go-to. If you’re fair, steer closer to a blue-based khaki (so less brown) so as not to muddy your skin tone – leave the yellow-based olive tones for the more tan among us. Go head to toe with hardware accessories for a military vibe, smarten it up for the office with navy or take it out after hours with a hit of leopard.
Topshop Jeans, approx. $66.20
Equipment Major Silk Shirt, $620
Tailored Bombers
Whilst the blazer and trench are outerwear non-negotiables, the tailored bomber jacket is your new all day every day separate. Look for luxe fabrics (think silks and quilting) to tone down the post-workout silhouette and bring it into a new light.
KENZO Embroidered Bomber Jacket, $391.72
Witchery Quilted Bomber, $69.95
Over-The-Knee Boots
Think bigger and better for Fall in a larger than life boot – over the knee is where we’re aiming for this season. Layer over your denim for day or with a mini hemline for night – it’s the all day every day accessory wingman.
Stuart Weitzman Lowland Boots, $1,317.30
KO Irving Boots, $119.95
KEEP:
Flares
Seventies fever is still running hot, so don’t shelve your flared trousers and denim just yet. Pack away your peasant blouses and leave the dreamy, romantic vibe to summertime – channel Jane Birkin for winter in tees, knits and leather jackets for a Gallic moment instead.
MIH Marrakech Flared Jeans, $185
Country Road Indigo Flares, $129
Chokers
Choker neckpieces exploded as the accessory du jour last season. Reiterate it for winter over your separates with a high neckline – try it over a turtleneck or a funnel-neck blouse instead.
Natalie Chapman Choker, $79
Bardot Leatherette Lariat, $9.95
Fluted Sleeves
A loud and proud voluminous sleeve is heaven in summertime for an instant outfit lift – but despite all its efforts to be the star of the show, tempering them under outerwear is a sneaky styling trick to extend the shelf life of your fluted numbers. Layer under a fitted knit for extra warmth without losing any of the drama for night.
Witchery Aka Flared Top, $99.95
Ellery Mars Zip-Front Dress, $866
STORE:
Sheers. Unless you’re a seasoned expert at layering, sheers become a potentially explosive equation of lightweight versus heavyweight fabrics in order to maintain the perfect balance of a) keeping you warm enough to function and b) balancing your silhouette (Michelin Man up top and slinky silk down below is not ideal). Best to bid them adieu until the heat hits.
Wrap Heels. Like seeing a man in Havaianas in the rain (one word: ew), anything that shone a spotlight towards an impeccable pedicure during the warmer months should probably be shelved across A/W. Icy-cold toes aren’t an accessory you want to be wielding, so tuck them into a high-heeled boot instead.
Off-The-Shoulder. Coat season covers up those bad boys, so trade in that slip of collarbone for a deep-v knit or shirting in its place – all the décolletage without the chill.
