It seems not even producing powerhouse Will.I.Am can influence the ARIA charts, with Anja Nissen, winner of The Voice Australia 2014 only selling 3023 copies nationally, of her debut single.
With previous backlash from reality singing show winners releasing their first singles days after the show’s finale, Will.I.Am’s strategy to release the 18 year old’s debut album three months after The Voice concluded, hasn’t managed to make a dent in the ARIA’s singles chart.
On the back of Taylor Swift’s 1989 album storm selling over 1 million copies in its first week, Anja Nissen’s I’m So Excited debuted at No. 42 on the ARIA chart with 3023 sales nationally.
Marlisa, who won The X Factor 2014, continued like victors before her and released her first single immediately after the show’s conclusion. She has been sitting in the top five of the ARIA chart ever since.
By comparison, this week’s ARIA No. 1 single, Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran, sold just over 24,000 copies.
According to reports the winner’s single was originally co-written by Delta Goodrem, recorded, and rejected at the last minute by Will.I.Am of world-wide Black Eyed Peas fame. The music mogul, who has 12.5million Twitter followers, wrote I’m So Excited, and also features on the track with Anja and US singer Cody Wise, who are both signed to Will.I.Am’s label.
Nissen’s single was also rumoured to feature X Factor’s RedFoo, who was left off the final version of the song.
The single and video, missing out on a top 40 spot, has polarised fans and viewers making for both positive and negative feedback through social media channels.
Last year’s winner Harrison Craig is yet to release his own original album, after two covers records. None of the runners-up from this year’s season of The Voice have been signed by Universal Records.
Will.I.Am is siad to not be returning for The voice 2015, but Joel Madden is likely to take part in the next season as a judge.
Meanwhile X Factor runners-up Dean Ray and Brothers 3 also saw disappointing sales despited their national popularity with Ray’s single Coming Back dropping from No. 5 to No. 32 and selling just 4154 copies. Brothers 3, whose single The Lucky Ones hit a No. 29 debut last week plunged to No. 98 after only 902 sales nationally.
Sony have reportedly signed Marlissa, Dean Ray and Reigan Derry from X Factor 2014 for future album releases.
