It’s been quite a week for Wimbledon stars, and today is no exception. This morning, Dawn Fraser appeared on channel 9’s Today program slamming tennis player Nick Kyrgios for his “spoilt” behaviour at Wimbledon, and Bernard Tomic’s attack on Tennis Australia, leading to his expulsion from the Davis Cup team.
Kyrgios, who could be facing a $27,000 fine for allegedly giving up points, has denied tanking allegations in a stormy press conference following his exit from Wimbledon.
The 20 year old has been accused of not giving his ‘best efforts’ during the third game of the second set of the loss to France’s Richard Gasquet, after being booed by the crowd.
This comes after Kyrgios’ public attack on Tennis Australia, claiming that Bernard Tomic was unfairly axed from the Australian team. Tomic, who took aim at Pat Rafter and Tennis Australia for showing him a ‘lack of respect’ was dumped from Australia’s Davis Cup team after Wimbledon after a meeting with chief executive Craig Tiley and president Stephen Healy at Wimbledon on Saturday night.
But Dawn Fraser’s comments this morning did nothing to settle the dust, with the former Olympian being labelled as racist by Kyrgios.
‘They should be setting a better example for the younger generation of this country, a great country of ours… If they don’t like it, go back to where their fathers or their parents came from. We don’t need them here in this country if they act like that.’ Fraser stated.
The Canberra-born Kyrgios, who is of Greek and Malaysian heritage, fought back today, labelling Fraser a “blatant racist”, whilst Kyrgios’ mother Nill posted on Twitter ‘I have no comments on Dawn Frasers nasty racist attack…but she is out of line. #unaustralianbehaviour’.
