Most of us think that indigestion is a cause of an over-production of acid when it can be just a likely to be an under-production of acid. With over 33% of the Western world suffering from indigestion, we really need to have a better understanding of how to improve this problem.
Here are Zoe’s top tips to beat bloating:
1. Reduce the portions of your meals.
Indigestion, especially reflux, is caused by overeating, which causes gastric juices to flow up the oesophagus, leading to a burning discomfort. Reducing your portions will not only help with indigestion, it will also reduce the amount of calories in your diet. Try using a small plate or bowl when eating your meals.
2. Supplementing with digestive enzymes
This helps to alleviate indigestion by facilitating the digestion of undigested food in the stomach that may be causing indigestion. Many people who suffer from indigestion produce an insufficient amount of Pancreatic Enzymes. Try having 2 tsp of Apple Cider Vinegar in water 15 minutes before each meal.
3. Stop smoking.
Smoking is believed to be a massive cause of indigestion. It has the effect of increasing intra-abdominal pressure, which causes the content of your stomach to flow upwards leaving you with a feeling of acid in the oesophagus.
4. Peppermint is fantastic in alleviating indigestion.
Peppermint has a calming effect on the digestive system, which is brilliant in the reduction of indigestion. Try drinking a cup of peppermint tea 10 minutes after eating.
5. Fennel is also excellent in the treatment of indigestion.
Fennel helps to stimulate salivary glands to product more saliva, which helps increase digestion. Fennel seeds can be made into tea, or sprinkled into foods.
