Messy, sexy and a little bit of punk: backstage with Aveda and Bobbi Brown at Yigal Azrouël.
Forget prim and proper uptown, this show was all about downtown sexiness, wearability and ease, right from the clothes to the hair and make-up.
RESCU loves the smoky eyes and no make-up/make-up look dreamed up by Yigal Azrouël and executed to perfection by Bobbi Brown, who describes this backstage look as “exactly what the designer wanted”.
The challenge for Brown was to create a look of no blush, no lips and only sexy eye make-up without making the models look “as if they were dead”, but the outcome has helped Brown to dream up one of the next formulas for a cake eye shadow that we may see on her counters very soon.
“This was my first season working with Yigal Azrouël, and I really enjoyed the collaboration. His spring line is feminine yet deconstructed, so to play off the collection I created a natural look featuring a strong “smudged” smoky eye. I swept Charcoal Eye Shadow along the upper and lower lash line, and then smudged it out to give it some dimension and edge. Then I applied two coats of Extreme Party Mascara (launching this November) for even more definition. I kept the rest of the face clean and natural with minimal foundation, a touch of sheer Lip Balm, and Clear Brow Gel. The look is a perfect combination of downtown edge and glamorous chic.” – Bobbi Brown
To get this look:
For this look getting the base right is the key. Flawless, healthy skin with a ‘no make-up’ look is achieved by using a primer, foundation, a little concealer and a light dust of powder. The main focus is on the eyes. For this look, eye shadows and liquid liners were replaced with soft eyeliner pencils, which were used as a shadow and spread with an eyeshadow brush to create a mildly messy and punky smoky eye that goes outside the eyelid, rather than the classic ‘clean’ smoky eyes. As no base was used, the look is softer and smudges more easily, before a light coating of powder on the top is used to set the look. The look is finished with multiple coats of Extreme Party Mascara.
In theme, Aveda’s Antoinette Beenders created a wet-look hairstyle by using Aveda Brilliant Humectant Pomade, complete with messy waves and slicked back, roughed-up pony tales that are the perfect shower-chic look for the occasional rainy Aussie day, or mornings when you hit that snooze button one too many times.
