How To Get Your Dream Jo
1. Do your research
After you’ve identified the industry you’d like to work in, start thinking about 3-5 companies you’d like to work for. Google them, read their annual reports–if they release a particular publication, get your hands on every copy you can. Know them inside out. Do the same for the industry at large. Research their competition. This is the best prep you can do for landing the job of your dreams. You’ll know exactly what you’re in for in advance, and be equipped with all the knowledge you need to wow them if you do score an interview. Knowledge is power.
2. Seek out all opportunities
Be open to any and all opportunities that relate to the industry you’d like to crack. Don’t wait for them to come your way. Seek them out. Offer to do work experience (and be prepared to do so for quite some time, as this is the best way to get your foot in the door, and land the job of your dreams). Contact any of the companies you’d like to work for in your industry and inquire about work experience/their internship policy. If you’re successful, treat work experience like a real job. Dress to impress, always be on time and be willing to go the extra mile (while wearing a smile). Actively pursue all opportunities, as you never know where they may lead you.
3. Confidence will get your everywhere
Always have confidence in your abilities to be open to giving anything a go. Following your dreams takes courage–carry an undercurrent of confidence with you always and don’t be scared by an opportunity. Believe in yourself and your abilities, and others will too.
4. Be you
Think of what it is about you that sets you apart from the rest. Think of the industry you’d like to work in, and what unique set of skills/attributes you either have, or can further develop that others don’t have. A sense of individuality can be highly marketable–so instead of trying to be like everybody else, celebrate your uniqueness, and think of ways you can apply it to your career in a positive way.
5. Find a mentor
The best way to gain a true insight into how to break into a particular industry, and what it’s really like once you have; is by speaking to somebody who has been there and done it themselves. If you don’t know anyone who has worked in the industry, find somebody who has. Don’t be intimidated to reach out to a potential mentor. Mostly you’ll find they are happy to answer any questions you have, as chances are–someone has done the exact same thing for them once upon a time. A mentor can be a wealth of information, and the next best thing to firsthand experience. So treat their advice as sage wisdom.
6. Create clear goals
Setting yourself goals is an integral step in landing the job of your dreams. List down where you’d like to be by when, what you intend on doing to get there, and track your progress regularly. If there is anything you’re lacking in terms of education or specific credentials that you think will help significantly; factor these into your set of goals. Make a series of small, achievable steps that lead to your ultimate goal; scoring the job of your dreams.
