According to Expert Hairstylist Joey Scandizzo, less is more when it comes to the sharpest straight styles. “Olivia Palermo and Blake Lively both rock their straight hair and I love their centre parts,” he says. “They both always have just the right amount of soft volume and make it look so effortlessly easy. This is such a sexy style that is universally flattering for women. I am also loving Jennifer Lawrence’s new straight-cropped look. She works the texture and volume perfectly to compliment her straight hair.”
As with any cut, colour or coif, care is key. “Straight hair looks great when it is smooth, sleek and shiny so I’d recommend finding a good anti-frizz cream and light shine spray that work for your hair as, well as using regular treatments,” Joey advises
Joey thinks sleeker, smoother styles make the hair look healthier and beautiful.
This trend is best played out with a blunt, straight-length cut, he suggests. “Cuts will be more structured and less choppy and layered than they’ve been,” Joey notes. “Centre parts and fringes are also big at the moment, especially with straight hair.”
To add volume to a blunt style, prep the hair with a volumising mousse to give the hair texture, body and control without weighing it down. “You could also apply a light mist of Sea Salt Spray to give the hair some grit and natural movement and when blow drying your hair, make sure you use a large round brush to get lots of lift at the roots,” suggests Joey. “If you blow-dry your hair flat, you’ll have a hard time getting the volume back.”
When it comes to colour, ‘Block Colouring’ with pastel tones is coming back in and there is a lot of ‘Panel’ work on straight hair. “The balayage days are on the way out!” he says.
Up Do’s:
Smooth pulled-back and pulled-up styles are a great way to wear straight hair at any length, any season with the three big ones being:
– Dead straight low slung ponytails
– Smooth single plait or braid
– Polished French roll, up do. Going back to structured hairstyles with a lot of edge.
“Not only do these classic styles look chic and sophisticated, they’re perfect for summer because they keep the hair off the face and help avoid frizz caused by humidity,” and in winter they work wonders on windy days to keep you looking groomed!
