Dr. Shenouda believes in the empowering role sexual health plays in women’s wellbeing and has dedicated his practice to demystifying the delicate and private subject, ensuring his clients are comfortable and secure when considering any intimate procedure. Here are the other facts he has shared with us:
What is vaginal rejuvenation?
Vaginal rejuvenation refers to a variety of surgical and non-surgical procedures. Its main goal is to improve functionality; tightening, repair, or otherwise improve the sexual function or appearance (or sometimes both) of the inner or outer vagina. It’s not just surgery. Vaginal rejuvenation also addresses Growth Factors, Platelets Rich Plasma, labiaplasty, laser rejuvenation for incontinence or autoptic vaginitis, post menopausal symptoms, post breast cancer or it can be about tightening and sensitivity and issues such as chafing or discomfort.
What is labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is very much a medical procedure first. There is a misconception that labiaplasty is purely a cosmetic procedure with no medical implications.
What are some of the reasons women have this procedure?
The procedure is a minimally invasive genital reduction that helps reduce symptoms of chafing anddiscomfort when wearing tight clothes. It also helps with pain and discomfort during sex or during exercise and may help reduce vaginal odour due to bacteria on excess skin. Outside of addressing the physical symptoms, the procedure also aims to improve the appearance of the labia so it doesn’t hang or protrude resulting in less prominence of the female genitalia.
What about the psychological and cosmetic aspects?
For some women it can be devastating. Some women just refuse to have sex with the lights on, others shower in their undies. Redesigning the labia in these cases can be life-changing in terms of pain and body image. In one report from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, patients even delayed their Pap Smear due to embarrassment about their labia during the examination.* And I see this embarrassment frequently in my own practice.
Who should have a labiaplasty and who shouldn’t?
It’s REALLY important to distinguish exactly who is suitable for the procedure and who isn’t. In some cases, there is a real physical or psychological need to have the procedure. Sometimes it’s genetics (some women are born with a large labia). In other cases its ageing, as around menopause less oestrogen causes the tissues of the vulva and lining of the vagina to become thinner, drier and less elastic. Other women have the procedure because a large labia can cause infections, rubbing, chafing, odour and itching.
Pain during sex is a big one. Labial hypertrophy can cause significant pain during intercourse (dyspareunia) and one 2017 study* found that pain during intercourse caused by labial hypertrophy is more dependent on size than length, meaning that the labia should be operated on differently when painful sex is the main issue. For other women, uneven or protruding labia impacts self confidence and their ability to have intimate relations which can be truly devastating for them.
What are the different types of labiaplasty procedures?
The procedure is not just about fixing the technical but reshaping and improving “aesthetic design”. All labiaplasty procedures are performed during a day procedure in hospital and excess tissue is removed from the labia to reduce the size of the labia and correct any potential asymmetry. It’s about “design and precision” to a “NATURAL LOOK AND FEEL” of all areas of the vagina: the majora, the minora, clitoris hood and perineum and also anal tags.
Variations of labiaplasty include a Labia Majoraplasty procedure which includes removal of excess skin orfat injections to plump up the outer lips. Clitoral hood reduction involves redesigning the excess skin foldsto make the area appear less bulky or “unhood” the clitoris to enhance sexual pleasure. Mons pubisprocedures include liposuction or fat removal. This procedure may be performed when diet and exercise donot improve the size or sagging.
How long does it take?
The labiaplasties I perform are generally done under a local anaesthetic and take 1-1.5 hours, with patientsnormally leaving an hour after the procedure. Stitches do not need to be removed as they dissolve. My female nurses at the clinic and the hospital always assist during the consultation and the procedure.
Does the labia REALLY change with age?
Yes. The most obvious changes are linked to a surge in hormones during puberty (becomes larger andthicker), in pregnancy (another increase in length and thickness) and around menopause (skin atrophies, sags and thins) when cells are readier to shear off with friction or mild trauma intercourse.
A lot of women have this procedure thinking of their partners expectations. But do men REALLY care about what a vagina looks like, in your opinion?
I have not heard women say their partner wants it! It’s women’s body IMAGE, PRIDE AND FEMININITY AND ALSO ABOUT the discomfort!
How much does a labiaplasty cost?
I charge a one-off fee of $4000 for labia MINORA SURGERY.
What is the recovery after a labiaplasty?
Someone should stay with you for at least 24 hours after you return home. However, it’s not a high recovery procedure and most women are walking around at home within an hour or two after leaving. Geniale Concierge is happy to drive you to your hotel (interstate) or home (local) after the procedure.
When will I see results?
For many women, results are evident IMMEDIATELY after surgery but swelling can obscure total results for up to six weeks.
